How to make Crochet Pattern

How to make Crochet Pattern

This pattern is a crochet lattice / diamond trellis stitch made with crossed double crochet clusters. I’ll explain it step by step so you can recreate what’s shown in the image.

🧶 MATERIALS

  • Yarn (medium / size 4 works best)
  • Crochet hook 4–5 mm
  • Scissors

📌 CROCHET TERMS (US)

  • ch = chain
  • yo = yarn over
  • dc = double crochet
  • sk = skip
  • sp = space
  • FPdc = front post double crochet

🔹 STEP 1: FOUNDATION CHAIN

  1. Make a slip knot
  2. Chain a multiple of 4 + 2
    • Example for practice: ch 26

🔹 STEP 2: ROW 1 (BASE ROW)

This row creates pairs of double crochet with spaces.

  1. Dc in the 4th chain from hook
  2. Dc in the next chain
→ You now have 2 dc
  3. Ch 2
  4. Skip next 2 chains
  5. Dc in next chain
  6. Dc in next chain
  7. Repeat steps 3–6 until the end of the row
  8. Turn your work

👉 You should see dc–dc, space, dc–dc, space across the row

🔹 STEP 3: ROW 2 (START THE WEAVE)

This is where the lattice look appears.

  1. Ch 3 (counts as first dc)
  2. Dc in the next dc
  3. Ch 2
  4. Skip the ch-2 space

🔸 MAKING THE CROSSED STITCH (IMPORTANT PART)

You will crochet around the posts, not into the top loops.

  1. FPdc around the FIRST dc of the NEXT dc pair
    • Yarn over
    • Insert hook from front to back around the post
    • Complete dc
  2. FPdc around the SECOND dc of the PREVIOUS pair
    • This crosses the stitch backward
    • Yarn over, hook around the post, finish dc

👉 You will see an “X” shape

  1. Ch 2
  2. Skip next space
  3. Repeat crossed FPdc steps across the row
  4. Finish with dc in the last 2 dc
  5. Turn

🔹 STEP 4: ROW 3 (REPEAT PATTERN)

  1. Ch 3
  2. Dc in next dc
  3. Ch 2
  4. Skip space
  5. Make crossed FPdc around the next visible dc posts
    • Always work over the vertical posts
  6. Repeat to end
  7. Turn

🔁 STEP 5: CONTINUE

  • Keep repeating Row 3
  • The diamond / basket pattern will grow taller

💡 VERY IMPORTANT TIPS

✔ Keep yarn slightly loose
✔ Always crochet around posts, not into stitches
✔ If it curls, use a bigger hook
✔ Blocking makes the pattern look perfect

🔍 HOW TO KNOW YOU’RE DOING IT RIGHT

  • You see clear diamond holes
  • Stitches look twisted and woven
  • Fabric feels flexible, not stiff
