Step-by-step to make Crochet Stitch

Step-by-step to make Crochet Stitch

this one’s a long loop / fringe crochet stitch 🌈✨
It’s super decorative and easier than it looks. I’ll explain it step by step so you can copy it exactly.

MATERIALS (important details)

  • Yarn: Medium weight (worsted / 4). Cotton or acrylic is best.
  • Hook: 4–5 mm
  • Optional tool:
    • Ruler / knitting needle / chopstick (for equal loop length)

STEP 1: FOUNDATION

  1. Make a slip knot
  2. Chain any number (example: ch 20)
  3. Add 1 extra chain (turning chain)

STEP 2: BASE ROW (VERY IMPORTANT)

This row holds the loops.

  1. Insert hook into 2nd chain from hook
  2. Yarn over, pull through
  3. Yarn over, pull through both loops
πŸ‘‰ This is single crochet (sc)
  4. Continue sc in every chain
  5. Turn your work

STEP 3: MAKING THE LONG LOOP STITCH (MAIN PART)

For EACH stitch, do this:

πŸ”Ή A. Insert hook

  • Insert hook into the next stitch

πŸ”Ή B. Pull up a loop

  • Yarn over
  • Pull up a long loop (do NOT tighten)

πŸ”Ή C. Create the long fringe

Choose ONE method:

Method 1 (with tool – best):

  • Place ruler/needle behind the hook
  • Wrap yarn around hook AND tool once
  • Keep it loose

Method 2 (without tool):

  • Wrap yarn around hook 2 times
  • Hold wraps gently with finger

πŸ”Ή D. Finish stitch

  • Yarn over
  • Pull through ALL loops on hook
  • Chain 1 (this locks the loop)

✨ One long fringe loop is made!

STEP 4: COLOR CHANGE (LIKE PHOTO)

To change color cleanly:

  1. Finish a loop stitch
  2. Drop old color
  3. Pull new color through the hook
  4. Chain 1
  5. Make next long loop stitch

πŸ‘‰ Each stitch = one color stripe

STEP 5: REPEAT ACROSS ROW

  • Make 1 long loop stitch in each stitch
  • Keep:
    • Same wrap count
    • Same tension
    • Same tool position

When finished β†’ DO NOT TURN YET

STEP 6: LOCKING ROW (DO NOT SKIP)

This prevents loops from pulling out.

  1. Turn work
  2. Chain 1
  3. Single crochet across, crocheting between loop bases
  4. Fasten off or repeat pattern

FINAL STRUCTURE (VERY IMPORTANT)

Row 1: Single crochet
Row 2: Long loop stitch
Row 3: Single crochet
Repeat Rows 2–3

COMMON MISTAKES & FIXES

❌ Loops uneven β†’ Use ruler
❌ Loops too loose β†’ Fewer wraps
❌ Curling fabric β†’ Use larger hook
❌ Gaps β†’ Tighten the locking chain
