How to make Crochet Blanket

How to make Crochet Blanket

This looks like a crochet shell lattice / diamond shell stitch (also called offset shells with chain crossings). I’ll explain it step by step so you can recreate the same fabric.

MATERIALS

  • Yarn: medium/light yarn (cotton recommended)
  • Hook: 3.0–4.0 mm
  • Scissors

CROCHET TERMS (US)

  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • sp = space
  • sk = skip
  • rep = repeat

STEP 1: FOUNDATION CHAIN

This stitch needs a multiple of 6 + 1

Examples:

  • Small swatch: ch 31
  • Larger: ch 37, 43, 49, etc.

STEP 2: ROW 1 (FIRST SHELL ROW)

  1. Dc in the 4th chain from the hook
    • (the skipped 3 chains count as the first dc)
  2. Dc in the next 2 chains
→ You now have 3 dc
  3. Ch 2
  4. Dc in the next 3 chains
→ This forms one long flat shell
  5. Skip 2 chains
  6. Repeat steps 1–5 across the row
  7. End with 1 dc in the last chain
  8. Turn work

👉 You should see shell shapes with chain spaces between them.

STEP 3: ROW 2 (OFFSET SHELLS)

  1. Ch 3 (counts as first dc)
  2. In the first ch-2 space, work:
    • 2 dc
    • ch 2
    • 3 dc
      → (this is one shell)
  3. Ch 2
  4. Skip the next shell completely
  5. In the next ch-2 space, repeat:
    • 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc
  6. Ch 2
  7. Repeat across the row
  8. Finish with 1 dc into the top of the turning chain
  9. Turn

👉 The shells now sit between the shells from Row 1.

STEP 4: ROW 3 (DIAMOND NET ROW – VERY IMPORTANT)

This row creates the crossed diamond look.

  1. Ch 3
  2. Sc into the first ch-2 space
  3. Ch 3
  4. Sc into the next ch-2 space
  5. Repeat:
    • sc, ch 3
    • sc, ch 3
      across the row
  6. End with dc in last stitch
  7. Turn

👉 You should now see X-shaped diamonds forming.

STEP 5: ROW 4 (FULL SHELLS)

  1. Ch 3
  2. In each ch-3 space, work:
    • 5 dc
  3. Ch 2 between each shell
  4. Repeat across
  5. End with dc in last stitch
  6. Turn

👉 This recreates the shell texture inside the diamonds.

STEP 6: REPEAT

Repeat these rows:

  • Row 2
  • Row 3
  • Row 4

until your piece reaches the desired length.

EDGE FINISH (OPTIONAL – LIKE THE PHOTO)

Along the sides:

  • Work 5 dc in each side space
  • Slip stitch between shells

Top edge:

  • 1 sc in each stitch
  • 3 sc in shell centers for a smooth finish

IMPORTANT TIPS

✔ Keep chain spaces loose
✔ Count stitches every row
✔ Block your work – the diamonds open beautifully
✔ Use cotton yarn for sharp definition
